POSSIBLE POLITICAL IMPACT OF THE IEVOLI SUN ON THE EU PROCESSES

The type of vessel, cargo, environmental conditions and procedure have yet to be defined. INTERTANKO believes that as a basis for discussion it is not unreasonable to explore this idea. However, it is a complicated matter and needs careful consideration. The EU Commissioner, Loyola De Palacio has made a commitment to evaluate it and ascertain what options - if any - are available consistent with EU principles.   

In any case such a proposal would have to be discussed at the meeting of the Council of Transport Ministers on 22 December. It is at this meeting that we expect so-called "political agreement" on the three proposals of the first Erika package and where ministers for the first time will also have the second Erika-package presented to them.
