INTERTANKO has members in 43 countries, reflecting the
global spread of the tanker industry and of the Association¹s activities. There
is also a diverse range of tanker types in the membership fleet. There are now
only 210 very large crude carriers (VLCCs), a ship type which predominated over
a decade ago, whereas the number of tankers of below 20,000 dwt has increased to
over 400. The sector which has expanded most rapidly in recent years is chemical
tankers - there are now 400 such ships in the INTERTANKO membership fleet.
The following table provides a breakdown of the top ten nations within
the INTERTANKO membership, according to number of tankers belonging to
owners/managers based in that country. Greek owners, with 359 tankers or 18 per
cent of INTERTANKO fleet, represent the largest contingent within the
Association¹s membership.
